TODAY, FROM YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW
Curator, Jaclyn Blumas
Today, from yesterday and tomorrow is a group show consisting of 15 artists from across North America. All at different stages in their artistic careers, each artist demonstrates a bond between traditional craft techniques and contemporary aesthetic. The ongoing tension between the spheres of fine art and craft relates to the medium, and how it has been used historically in a utilitarian context. The works in the exhibition speak about the process of creation within the dichotomies of old and modern technology.
All the works in the show are moments of transformation that look to communicate the process of exchange. Exchanging information, exchanging space, exchanging time, and exchanging perspectives. For most of the works in the show the medium becomes the main element in the exchange, through which varied perspectives with craft process are explored.
In machine-meets-man-meets-digital culture, a concern with the disappearance of the craft maker is addressed as an interdisciplinary process applied to the art works. From teaching, to collecting, to archiving, to building, to learning, we open a familiar discourse which, although brings elements of nostalgia, collaborates with the viewer in its modern context to build upon on a new experience.

I think about knitting when I paint.
I think about painting while I knit.
It is this constant exchange of ideas that leads me to find new possibilities in the work.
For the current show, Knit N' Paintin', I'm exploring an elusive boundaries between "art" and "craft". By utilizing both the language of painting and knitting, I have created a body of work which includes knit/canvas paintings.
